Unthankful: A Modern Epidemic
We live in a time where entitlement seems to be the prevailing attitude among youth, family members, and even church congregants. But what does it mean to be entitled? Entitlement is the belief that one inherently deserves privileges or special treatment. It manifests as the assumption that somewhere in the cosmos, money, gifts, or even land are automatically theirs. This mindset often leads to behaviors like shoplifting for instant gratification, seeking to satisfy desires without considering consequences.
Biblical Perspective on Being Unthankful
2 Timothy 3:2 (KJV) "For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,."
a. End Times Sign: This scripture identifies ingratitude as a characteristic of people in the last days, signaling moral decay.
b. Self-Centeredness: Being unthankful is linked with other selfish traits, such as pride and greed, showing a disregard for others.
c. Disobedience and Disrespect: Ingratitude often accompanies disobedience to authority, reflecting a lack of respect and humility.
d. Spiritual Decline: Ingratitude is not just a social issue but a spiritual one, indicating a move away from holiness and righteousness.

The Importance of Saying Thank You
I was watching Evangelist Joyce Meyer on TV, and she shared an insightful story. She mentioned how people would ask her for financial help for orphanages or community projects. After sending them the money, she noticed that many never took the time to say thank you. This lack of gratitude is disheartening and speaks to a broader issue of entitlement.
My wife, Pastor Everie Turnbull Hazell, exemplifies the importance of gratitude. She always takes the time to text thank you messages and even writes cards saying thank you and God bless you. I applaud her for this gesture. It's a simple yet profound way to show appreciation and acknowledge the kindness of others.
Historic Precedence of Thankfulness
One notable example of a thankful leader is President Abraham Lincoln. During the Civil War, he proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving. Despite the country's turmoil, Lincoln recognized the importance of thanking God for the blessings received. This act of gratitude helped to unify the nation and reminded people of the need to acknowledge God's hand in their lives.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it is crucial to cultivate a spirit of thankfulness. Here are five reasons why it is important to be thankful:
1. Gratitude Acknowledges God’s Goodness: Being thankful helps us recognize and appreciate God's blessings in our lives.
2. Enhances Relationships: Expressing gratitude strengthens bonds with others by showing appreciation for their kindness.
3. Fosters Humility: Thankfulness reminds us that we are not self-sufficient and need others, fostering a sense of humility.
4. Improves Mental Health: Studies show that gratitude can lead to improved mental well-being, reducing stress and increasing happiness.
5. Cultivates a Positive Outlook: A thankful heart focuses on the positive aspects of life, helping to cultivate a more optimistic perspective.
Let us strive to be more thankful in our daily lives, recognizing the blessings we receive and expressing our gratitude to God and others.
