  • Deliverance from the Present Evil Age

  • Who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father."Galatians 1:4

    • The Bible dictionary defines "this present evil age" as the corrupt and fallen state of the world.

    • Jesus gave Himself on the cross to deliver us from the moral and spiritual decay of this age.

Introduction:

  • In this sermon, we will see how we can be delivered from this present evil age by the grace of God in Christ, and how we can live as citizens of the age to come.

Text

  • Galatians 1:4: “Who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father.”

    • Christ gave Himself as a sacrifice for our sins, to rescue us from the power and penalty of sin.

    • Christ delivered us from this present evil age, to free us from the bondage and corruption of the world system.

  • 1 John 4:3: “And every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.”

    • *The spirit of the Antichrist is the spirit that opposes and denies the truth of Christ and His incarnation.

    • *The spirit of the Antichrist is already in the world, working through: false teachers, false religions, and false ideologies.

    • *The spirit of the Antichrist is not of God, and we must test the spirits by the Word of God and the Spirit of God.

  • 1 John 2:15: “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

  • James 4:4: “Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.”

    • *Friendship with the world means being conformed to the values, standards, and practices of the world that are contrary to God’s will.

    • Friendship with the world is enmity with God, because it shows a lack of loyalty, faithfulness, and devotion to God.

    • Friendship with the world makes us enemies of God, because it puts us in opposition and conflict with God and His purposes.

Conclusion:

  • We have seen that we are delivered from this present evil age by the grace of God in Christ, and that we are called to live as citizens of the age to come.

  • How can we do this practically? Here are some suggestions:

    1. We must remember that we are not of the world, but we are in the world to be the light and salt of the world (John 17:14-18; Matthew 5:13-16).

    2. We must renew our minds by the Word of God, and not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the Holy Spirit (Romans 12:2; Ephesians 4:23-24).

    3. We must set our minds on things above, and not on things on the earth, and seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Colossians 3:1-4; Matthew 6:33).

    4. We must resist the devil and his temptations, and submit to God and His authority, and draw near to God and His grace (James 4:7-8; 1 Peter 5:8-9).

    5. We must look forward to the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who will bring us into the fullness of His kingdom (Titus 2:11-14; 2 Peter 3:11-13).

  • My prayer, may God help us to live as those who are delivered from this present evil age, and who belong to the age to come. Amen.
