WHAT TO DO TO CHANGE THE ATMOSPHERE IN YOUR HOME

Changing the Atmosphere in Your Home

Joshua 24:15 (NKJV): "But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

 Introduction

God instructed the Israelites to keep His word at the forefront of their lives. They were to teach His commandments diligently to their children, talk about them at home, and write them on their hearts and minds. By embedding God's Word into the fabric of their daily lives, the Israelites were able to create an environment that honored and revered God.

 Set Boundaries in Your Home

Boundaries are essential in creating a healthy and respectful environment. They indicate what is and isn't permitted, whether from a practical standpoint or for health reasons. Teenagers may test these boundaries and challenge authority, which is why consistent, loving discipline is crucial. For instance, you might prohibit smoking or alcohol in your home and avoid channels that broadcast inappropriate content. Establishing these limits creates a safe space where everyone can thrive.

 Build an Altar

An altar, by definition, was a meeting place between God and man. In Scripture, altars were significant locations where individuals marked special visitations from angels and from God. During times of distress, people would return to these places of visitation and present their offerings to God, seeking His intervention and guidance. Building a spiritual altar in your home can serve as a focal point for prayer, worship, and connection with God.

 Anoint Your House

Anointing your house involves taking a small portion of oil, which represents the Holy Spirit's anointing, and applying it with your fingers to the doorposts both outside and inside the house. This act of faith symbolizes inviting God's presence and protection into every part of your home. Anointing your house sets it apart as a sacred space where the Holy Spirit dwells and guides.

 Mark Your House

The Lord instructed the early Israelites to mark the gates of their homes with His Word. While painting scriptures on the outside of our homes might be impractical today, there are other ways to remind ourselves that our homes are dedicated to God. In biblical times, a sacred object called a mezuzah, meaning doorpost, served as a reminder that the house was dedicated to God and that those living there were committed to walking in His ways. Similarly, placing scripture verses or symbols of faith in visible places in your home can serve as constant reminders of your commitment to God.

Purge the Atmosphere with Praise and Worship

I once heard about a well-known evangelist who, upon entering a hotel room, would play praise and worship music and then leave for lunch. He believed that the music would purge and cleanse the atmosphere, creating a space conducive to God's presence. Scripture supports this concept: David's music brought refreshing and peace to the tormented King Saul.

1 Samuel 16:23 (NKJV) "And so it was, whenever the spirit from God was upon Saul, that David would take a harp and play it with his hand. Then Saul would become refreshed and well, and the distressing spirit would depart from him."

If music had such a profound effect in David's life and ministry, why would it not have the same effect today? Playing praise and worship music can change the atmosphere in your home, inviting God's peace and presence.

 Conclusion

As believers, we are called to sanctify and cleanse our homes, making them places where God's presence can dwell richly. According to Deuteronomy 28, God promises to bless those who obey His commandments, blessing their homes, their baskets, and all that they undertake. By implementing these practices—setting boundaries, building altars, anointing our homes, marking our houses with God's Word, and purging the atmosphere with praise and worship—we invite God's blessings into our families and create an environment where He is honored and glorified.

Deuteronomy 28:1-6 (NKJV): "Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you because you obey the voice of the Lord your God: 'Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country. Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, the produce of your ground and the increase of your herds, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks. Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.'"

Sanctifying and cleansing our homes not only brings God's blessings but also creates a sanctuary where His love, peace, and joy can flourish. Let us be diligent in making our homes a reflection of God's glory, trusting that He will bless us abundantly as we honor Him in every aspect of our lives.
