Just Obey God's Voice

Learning from the Hebrews' Journey

Introduction: Greetings, dear congregation. Today, we delve into the powerful lessons found in Deuteronomy 2, focusing on the theme of obedience to God's voice. As we examine the journey of the Hebrews towards inheriting the promised land, we'll explore the reasons why believers sometimes falter in obeying God's instructions.

But more importantly, we'll discover the profound blessings that come when believers choose obedience, just as the Hebrews did. This chapter reveals God's guidance on whom to wage war against and whom to spare, all due to the covenant He had established. Let us glean insights from these verses and draw practical applications for our lives today.

Scripture: Deuteronomy 2:1-3 "Then we turned back and set out toward the wilderness along the route to the Red Sea, as the Lord had directed me. For a long time, we made our way around the hill country of Seir. Then the Lord said to me, 'You have made your way around this hill country long enough; now turn north.'"

Points:

  1. Partial Obedience Delays Blessings: Often, believers hesitate to fully obey God's voice, leading to delays in their journey towards blessings.
  2. Trusting God's Timing: God's timing is perfect, even when it seems we are wandering in the wilderness. He knows when to prompt us to move forward.
  3. Unwavering Direction: God's guidance is unwavering. Our constant alignment with His voice ensures we don't linger in places of stagnation.
  4. Recognizing Divine Prompts: As followers of God, we must develop sensitivity to His instructions, responding promptly and fully.

Scripture: Deuteronomy 2:24-25 "Set out now and cross the Arnon Gorge. See, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his country. Begin to take possession of it and engage him in battle."

Points:

  1. Trust in God's Promises: God assures victory when we obey, just as He promised victory over Sihon.
  2. Bold Faith: Obedience requires boldness in stepping into challenging situations, knowing God is with us.
  3. Divine Empowerment: God equips us for the battles He commands us to engage in.
  4. Claiming Our Inheritance: Obedience is the key to claiming the spiritual territories God intends for us.

Scripture: Deuteronomy 2:29 "As the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, did for me, until I cross the Jordan into the land the Lord our God is giving us."

Points:

  1. Respecting Boundaries: Obedience means recognizing the boundaries God sets, respecting the territories of others.
  2. Covenant Keeping: God's instructions are tied to the covenants He has established. Our obedience preserves these covenants.
  3. Delayed Gratification: Trusting God's promise of a future inheritance sometimes requires refraining from immediate action.
  4. Walking in Unity: Obedience fosters unity among believers, respecting the paths of others and working together for God's purposes.

Scripture: Deuteronomy 2:30 "But Sihon king of Heshbon refused to let us pass through. For the Lord your God had made his spirit stubborn and his heart obstinate in order to give him into your hands, as he has now done."

Points:

  1. God's Sovereignty: God's sovereignty extends even to those who resist His will, ultimately serving His purposes.
  2. Spiritual Battles: Obedience can sometimes lead to confrontation with those who resist God's plans.
  3. Faithful Execution: Our role is to faithfully execute God's instructions; outcomes are in His hands.
  4. Humility and Gratitude: In victory, we must remain humble, acknowledging that God's grace and plan were at work.

Conclusion: In closing, dear believers, let us remember that obedience to God's voice is not just about going halfway but going all the way. Just as the Hebrews inherited the promised land through obedience, we too can claim our spiritual inheritance by following God's guidance fully and without compromise. Let's be attentive to His voice, trusting His timing, embracing His empowerment, and walking in unity and humility.

The journey might be challenging at times, but the blessings and victories that await are beyond measure. So, I invite you today to choose obedience, to heed God's voice, and to step into the promises He has prepared for you. May we be a congregation that wholeheartedly follows God's commands, knowing that in obedience, we find our truest blessings and fulfillment.
