How to Solve Problems with God’s Help: Lessons from Moses

Life has problems! Despite the differences, the one thing we all have in common is problems. Problems run after you, problems will run before you, problems will sit on you - who likes problems? However, in life there are problems everywhere you look: problems in our political system, problems in our family, problems in our church, problems in our community, problems on our island, problems in our nation and it goes on and on and on… As long as there is life, there will be problems. We cannot scream away our problems or run away from them. Problems were meant to be solved.

In the Bible, in Numbers 16, Moses had a problem. His problem was that Korah was upset because he and his brother Aaron held equal ranks within the family of Levi and therefore Korah thought he had the same rights to the office of high priest as did Aaron. How wrong he was! Sometimes we are in a situation like Moses: you are the leader and someone wants to outrank you and want to throw you out of your space and place and position that God has set you in. And it seems that everything that can go wrong is going wrong and how will you handle this problem? Are you brave enough to endure the earthquake, the turmoil, the ground swells and the tsunami that will come as you step out to solve it? Moses solved his problem by putting his confidence in God’s wisdom for his solution and we can too. Here are some steps that Moses took to solve his problem with God’s help:

Step 1: Pray to God for wisdom

In Numbers 16:4-7, Moses fell facedown and began to pray to God. When we have problems, the number one way out is to pray to God for wisdom. Sometimes our problems can consume our mind, our brain, our spiritual body and even our body chemistry. We cannot deal with the problem by ourselves. It far surpasses our mind, body, soul and spirit. So therefore we have to tap into a higher power which is God’s power and pray to God. Follow Moses’ example and pray for God’s wisdom.

  • Prayer is a powerful weapon against any problem. It connects us with God who knows everything and can do anything.
  • Prayer also helps us to humble ourselves before God and acknowledge that we need his help and guidance.

Step 2: Confront the problem with God’s authority

In Numbers 16:8-11, Moses confronted Korah and his followers with God’s authority. He reminded them that they were rebelling against God, not against him or Aaron. He also told them that God had chosen Aaron for the position of high priest, not because of his qualifications or merits, but because of his sovereign will. When we have problems, we need to confront them with God’s authority too. We need to remember that God is in control of everything and he has a purpose for everything that happens. We also need to trust that God has chosen us for a specific role or task and he will equip us with what we need.

  • Confronting the problem with God’s authority helps us to avoid being intimidated by popular opinion or human reasoning.
  • Confronting the problem with God’s authority also helps us to stand firm on God’s word and promises.

Step 3: Let God fight for you

In Numbers 16:16-17, Moses said to Korah: “You and all your followers are to appear before the Lord tomorrow—you and they and Aaron.” Moses called Korah and his company before the Lord so that God could judge them. See, Moses did not let himself be intimidated by popular opinion or human reasoning. Therefore, in the face of all this opposition, Moses trusted God and allowed him to fight his battles. We need to let God fight for us too when we face problems. We need to bring our problems before him and let him handle them according to his justice and mercy.

  • Letting God fight for us helps us to avoid taking matters into our own hands or resorting to violence or revenge.
  • Letting God fight for us also helps us to witness his power and glory as he displays his sovereignty over all situations.

Step 4: Obey God’s instructions

In Numbers 16:23-27, Moses obeyed God’s instructions to separate himself and the people from Korah and his followers before God destroyed them. Moses warned the people not to associate with them or share in their sin. When we have problems, we need to obey God’s instructions too. We need to listen to what he tells us through his word, his Spirit or his servants. We also need to follow his commands and avoid anything that displeases him or dishonors him.

  • Obeying God’s instructions helps us to avoid being caught up in the consequences of other people’s sins or mistakes.
  • Obeying God’s instructions also helps us to align ourselves with God’s will and plan for our lives.

Step 5: Praise God for his deliverance

In Numbers 16:28-35, Moses praised God for his deliverance from Korah and his followers. He acknowledged that God had done a great thing by showing his holiness and justice. He also thanked God for sparing him and the people from the wrath of God. When we have problems, we need to praise God for his deliverance too. We need to recognize that God has done a great thing by showing his love and grace. We also need to thank God for saving us and the people from the trouble or danger.

  • Praising God for his deliverance helps us to express our gratitude and appreciation to him for what he has done for us.
  • Praising God for his deliverance also helps us to testify of his goodness and faithfulness to others.

Conclusion

Life has problems, but we have a problem-solving God who can help us overcome any problem. We can learn from Moses how to solve problems with God’s help. Here are some key points to remember:

  • Pray to God for wisdom. He will give you the right perspective and direction for your problem.
  • Confront the problem with God’s authority. He will give you the courage and confidence to face your problem.
  • Let God fight for you. He will give you the victory and vindication over your problem.
  • Obey God’s instructions. He will give you the protection and provision for your problem.
  • Praise God for his deliverance. He will give you the joy and peace after your problem.
  • JUST REMEMBER!

Remember, no problem is too big or too small for God. He cares about you and he wants to help you. Trust him, follow him and praise him. He will solve your problems with his power and wisdom. Amen!
