God's Attributes and Nature: Understanding God's Divine Qualities

Introduction: As we embark on our journey to delve into the attributes of God, we find guidance in the wisdom of the esteemed Bible commentator, Dr. J. Vernon McGee. Dr. J. Vernon McGee, one of the most respected Bible commentators, articulated the essence of God's attributes in the following words: "The attributes of God are the inherent characteristics closely associated with or belonging to Him. They are the very essence of His being, not something added to His being, but the very essence of His being."1

God is Holy "Who will not fear you, O Lord, and bring glory to your name? For you alone are holy." - Revelation 15:4a (NIV)

  • God's holiness signifies His absolute purity and separation from all created things.
  • Holiness, in its essence, means being set apart from everything that is marred by evil and sin.

1.God is Loving "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." - Romans 5:8 (NIV)

  • God's love is unwavering and selfless, as evidenced by His sacrifice of Jesus for humanity.

3.God is Gracious "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God." - Ephesians 2:8 (NIV)

  • God's grace is a gift freely given, unearned by our actions.
  • His grace provides us with salvation, demonstrating His unmerited favor.

4.God is Benevolent "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." - James 1:17 (NIV)

  • God's benevolence is evident in the blessings and gifts He bestows upon His creation.
  • He remains constant and steadfast in His generosity.

5.God is Long-Suffering "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." - 2 Peter 3:9 (NIV)

  • God's long-suffering nature demonstrates His patience and desire for all to turn to Him.
  • He delays judgment to offer us opportunities for repentance.

6.God is Omniscient "Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account." - Hebrews 4:13 (NIV)

  • God's omniscience means He knows all things, past, present, and future.
  • His knowledge is perfect and infinite.

7.God is Omnipresent "Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?" - Psalm 139:7 (NIV)

  • God's omnipresence means He is present everywhere simultaneously.
  • There is no place where His presence is absent.

8.God is Omnipotent "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End." - Revelation 22:13 (NIV)

  • God's omnipotence is displayed through His infinite power and authority.
  • He can accomplish anything in harmony with His nature and purpose.

In Conclusion: Understanding the attributes and nature of God is crucial for every believer. It allows us to align our lives with His character, drawing us closer to our heavenly Father. As we contemplate these attributes, we gain deeper insight into the One who created us and the profound love He has for His creation.
