The Power of Atonement

Atonement is a central concept in Christianity that refers to the reconciliation between sinful mankind and the holy God. Christians believe that this reconciliation is possible through the sacrificial suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for the sins of humankind1. Atonement enables the forgiveness or pardoning of sin and the salvation of human beings, who can be reunited with God after death in Heaven1.

The Power of the Atonement

1. In the atonement we have remission of sins (Romans 3:24-25)

and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.

  • Remission means the cancellation or release from a debt or penalty. In the atonement, God cancels our debt of sin and releases us from its penalty, which is death (Romans 6:23).
  • Propitiation means the appeasement or satisfaction of God’s wrath against sin. In the atonement, God’s wrath is satisfied by the blood of Christ, who bore our sins on the cross and died in our place (Isaiah 53:5-6).

  • 2. In the atonement we have salvation from wrath (Exodus 12:13)

The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.

  • Salvation means the deliverance or rescue from danger or harm. In the atonement, God delivers us from his wrath and judgment that are due to our sin (Romans 5:9).
  • Passover means the sparing or protection from death. In the atonement, God spares us from death by accepting the blood of Christ as a substitute for our lives (1 Corinthians 5:7).

3. In the atonement there is deliverance from hell (Zechariah 9:11; Revelation 5:8-10)

As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.

And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.”

  • Deliverance means the liberation or freedom from bondage or captivity. In the atonement, God liberates us from hell, which is a place of eternal torment and separation from him (Matthew 25:41).
  • Ransom means the price or payment for redemption or release. In the atonement, God pays the price for our redemption by his own blood, which is precious and infinite in value (1 Peter 1:18-19).

4. In the atonement there is sanctification (Hebrews 2:11; Hebrews 10:14)

For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers,

For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

  • Sanctification means the purification or cleansing from sin and its effects. In the atonement, God purifies us from all our sins by washing us with the blood of Christ (1 John 1:7).
  • Perfection means the completion or fulfillment of a purpose or goal. In the atonement, God completes his work of salvation in us by making us holy and blameless before him (Ephesians 5:25-27).

5. In the atonement there is justification (Acts 13:38-39)

Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.

  • Justification means the declaration or acquittal of righteousness. In the atonement, God declares us righteous before him by forgiving our sins and imputing to us the righteousness of Christ (Romans 4:5-8).
  • Freedom means the exemption or release from obligation or restriction. In the atonement, God releases us from the law of Moses, which condemns us for our failure to keep it, and gives us the grace of Christ, which enables us to live for him (Galatians 2:16-21).

6. In the atonement there is peace with God (Ephesians 2:12)

remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

  • Peace means the harmony or reconciliation of a broken relationship. In the atonement, God reconciles us to himself by removing the hostility and enmity that sin caused between us (Romans 5:10-11).
  • Hope means the expectation or confidence of a future good. In the atonement, God gives us hope by bringing us into his family and his promises, which are fulfilled in Christ (Ephesians 2:19-22).

7. In the atonement there is the New Covenant (Matthew 26:28)

for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

  • Covenant means the agreement or contract between two parties. In the atonement, God establishes a new covenant with us by his blood, which guarantees his faithful love and mercy toward us (Jeremiah 31:31-34).
  • Forgiveness means the removal or cancellation of guilt and its consequences. In the atonement, God removes our guilt and its consequences by not counting our sins against us, but remembering them no more (Psalm 103:8-12).

8. In the atonement there is washing from sin (Revelation 1:5; Ephesians 1:7)

and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,

  • Washing means the cleansing or restoration of purity and wholeness. In the atonement, God cleanses us from our sins by his blood, which makes us pure and whole in his sight (Isaiah 1:18).
  • Redemption means the recovery or restoration of something lost or forfeited. In the atonement, God recovers us from our sins by his blood, which restores us to our original purpose and destiny in him (Colossians 1:13-14).

9. In the atonement there is overcoming power (Revelation 12:11)

And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.

  • Conquering means the victory or triumph over an enemy or obstacle. In the atonement, God gives us victory over Satan, who accuses us before God day and night, by the blood of Christ, which silences his charges against us (Romans 8:33-34).
  • Testimony means the witness or evidence of something true or real. In the atonement, God gives us a testimony of his love and grace toward us by the blood of Christ, which speaks better than the blood of Abel (Hebrews 12:24).

10. In the atonement there is salvation (Acts 4:12; Ephesians 1:7)

And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,

  • Salvation means the rescue or deliverance from danger or harm. In the atonement, God rescues us from sin, death, and hell by his blood, which is shed for us on the cross (1 Peter 3:18).
  • Grace means the favour or kindness of God toward undeserving sinners. In the atonement, God shows us his grace by his blood, which is poured out for us abundantly and freely (Titus 3:4-7).

Conclusion

The atonement is a wonderful and glorious truth that reveals the power of Jesus in saving sinners like us. Through his death on the cross and his resurrection from the dead, he has accomplished everything that we need for our salvation and eternal life. He has paid for our sins, satisfied God’s wrath, delivered us from hell, sanctified us by his Spirit, justified us by his righteousness, made peace with God for us, established a new covenant with us, washed us
