  3. I Corinthians 14:1 (NIV): "Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy."
  4. I Corinthians 14:12 (NIV): "So it is with you. Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit, try to excel in those that build up the church."
  5. I Timothy 4:14 (NIV): "Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you."
  6. II Timothy 1:6 (NIV): "For this reason, I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands."

The concept of gifts in the life of a believer is mentioned in several biblical passages, including Romans 12:6, I Corinthians 14:1 and 14:12, I Timothy 4:14, and II Timothy 1:6.

These passages highlight the idea that believers have different gifts bestowed upon them by God's grace and encourage them to use these gifts for the benefit of the church and the fulfillment of God's purposes.

In the Greek language, the word used for "gift" in these passages is "charisma" (χάρισμα). The term "charisma" refers to a gift of grace or an undeserved favor [3]. It is derived from the root word "charis," which means grace. Therefore, "charisma" signifies a grace-endowment or a free gift [3].

It emphasizes that these gifts are not earned or merited by human effort but are given as a manifestation of God's grace and favor towards believers.

The purpose of these gifts in the Christian life is to edify and build up the church. They are divinely empowered endowments that enable believers to serve and carry out God's plan for His people [3].

Each believer has a unique gift, and they are encouraged to use it in accordance with their faith and the love of God. These gifts can include: prophesying, teaching, serving, giving, leading, showing mercy, and many others [1].

Believers are urged to eagerly desire and excel in these gifts for the purpose of strengthening the church and promoting its growth. They are also reminded not to neglect or let their gifts lie dormant but to actively use and develop them [2]. The gifts are seen as a means through which believers participate in God's work and contribute to the well-being of the body of Christ.

Furthermore, the passages emphasize that these gifts are not to be taken for granted but to be recognized as a result of God's grace and the work of the Holy Spirit. They are to be used with humility, in line with God's word, and for the benefit of others.

In summary, the concept of gifts in the life of a believer refers to the various grace-endowments given by God to believers for the purpose of serving and building up the church.

These gifts are not earned but are freely given manifestations of God's grace and favor. Believers are encouraged to eagerly desire, excel in, and use these gifts in accordance with their faith and the love of God to fulfill their role in the body of Christ.
