What is prophecy?

  • Prophecy is a divine message from God conveyed to humans through prophets.
  • It foretells future events beyond human knowledge or guesswork.
  • Prophecy is a miracle of knowledge and a proof of the divine origin of the message.
  • It can be defined as the act of speaking forth by divine inspiration.

Why is it important to believe Bible prophecy?

  • Bible prophecy reveals God's plan and purpose for human history and salvation.
  • It demonstrates God's sovereignty and faithfulness to His promises.
  • It confirms the identity and mission of Jesus Christ as the Messiah and Savior.
  • Bible prophecy inspires faith, hope, and obedience among believers.

Dr. Jack Van Impe's Emphasis on Bible Prophecy:

  • Dr. Jack Van Impe, a renowned prophetic scholar, highlighted the convergence of prophecies in the Book of Revelation, demonstrating its significance.
  • He described prophecy as history written in advance, enabling spiritual preparation and guidance.

How did Jesus fulfill prophecies?

1.He would be the seed of a woman (Genesis 3:15):

  • This prophecy pointed to Jesus as the descendant of Eve, born of the Virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit.
  • Jesus defeated Satan by His death and resurrection.

2.He would come through the line of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Genesis 12:3; 17:19; 28:14):

  • These prophecies established Jesus' lineage as a descendant of the patriarchs, fulfilling God's promise.
  • Jesus brought blessing to all nations through His life, death, and resurrection.

3.He would be a descendant of Judah (Genesis 49:10):

  • Jacob's blessing confirmed that the Messiah would arise from the tribe of Judah.
  • Jesus fulfilled this prophecy through His genealogy and role as the King of kings.

4.He would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2):

  • Micah's prophecy pinpointed Bethlehem as Jesus' birthplace.
  • Jesus fulfilled this by being born in Bethlehem to Mary and Joseph during a census.

5.He would be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14):

  • Isaiah's prophecy spoke of a virgin birth, and Jesus fulfilled this through Mary and the Holy Spirit.
  • Jesus was known as Immanuel, "God with us."

6.He would sojourn into Egypt (Hosea 11:1):

  • Hosea's prophecy foreshadowed Jesus' flight to Egypt to escape Herod's threat.
  • Jesus' return from Egypt paralleled the Israelite exodus.

7.He would grow up at Nazareth and be called a Nazarene (Matthew 2:23):

  • Though not a direct Old Testament prophecy, it symbolized Jesus' humble upbringing and rejection.
  • Jesus fulfilled this by growing up in Nazareth, bearing the title "Jesus of Nazareth."

8.He would be crucified (Psalm 22:14-16):

  • David's psalm vividly described Jesus' suffering, crucifixion, and the mocking crowd.
  • Jesus' crucifixion, as recorded in the Gospels, fulfilled this prophecy.

9.He would suffer no broken bones at His crucifixion (Psalm 34:20):

  • Psalm 34 affirmed that none of the Messiah's bones would be broken.
  • Jesus' unbroken bones during His crucifixion validated this prophecy.

10.He would observe men casting lots for His clothing at His crucifixion (Psalm 22:18):

  • David's psalm foresaw the humiliating scene of soldiers dividing Jesus' garments and casting lots.
  • This prophecy was realized during Jesus' crucifixion.

11.He would live again (Job 19:25; Matthew 12:39-40; 16:21; John 2:19):

  • Job's declaration of faith in a living Redeemer found its fulfillment in Jesus' resurrection.
  • Jesus foretold His death and resurrection, which occurred as prophesied.

Conclusion

Believing in Bible prophecy is of paramount importance as it establishes Jesus as the Messiah, the Bible as the inspired word of God, and strengthens faith and hope. Through fulfilled prophecies, we witness God's sovereignty, faithfulness, and the divine plan for salvation. In the words of Jesus, the Scriptures bear witness about Him, underscoring the significance of understanding and trusting in prophecy (John 5:39). The Law, Prophets, and Psalms all find fulfillment in Jesus, affirming His divine mission (Luke 24:44).

Jesus said:

“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me” (John 5:39).

For I tell you that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled” (Luke 24:44).
